of giving interviews. what about that? >> chuck hagel considered for the defense secretary gave interview to "lincoln journal star" in his home state of nebraska. in the article that appeared after his nomination he described views as unequiv can, total support for israel. the distortions of the record have been outstanding. >> he dined at the pentagon without leon panetta and the joint chiefs and will be given an office here while preparing for testimony. bret? >> bret: jennifer griffin live at the pentagon. thank you. south carolina republicans senator lindsey graham has been one of the most ardent critics of how the administration has handled the benghazi attack. he joins us live tonight from columbia, south carolina. good evening, senator. >> thank you for having me. >> senator let's first start with your reaction to the release of this tunisian. >> i don't know if it's justified or not but it's like pulling teeth to get the administration to engage. it wrote the tunisian government and saying it was unsemiable not to grant an interview without a lawyer. they did give the f.b.i. acces
and krauthammer believes it's no accident, and no accidents he chose chuck hagel to be the next defense secretary in his world view he'll do the the dismantling that president obama wants to do, tucker? >> yeah, i mean, that's, look, it's impossible to know always the president's motivations in these things, but there's no question about the fact that defense as you pointed out a second ago, is the one area where the president seems willing or even eager to make difficulties. is that an accident? probably not. look, the single largest driver of the debt and the deficit is medicaid. and medicare. and there's been no willingness on the part of this administration to even have real conversations about cutting that. whereas, they're eager to cut pentagon spending and you're going to see them try to effect that. >> megyn: you know, julie, when the president first took office, he took heat for what detractors called an apology tour and he went to the foreign countries and started to list what he perceived as flaws in america's behavior in the past and then to sort of try to account for them. and then y
a little in the next segment. let me ask you, two recent announcements in relation to chuck hagel as defense secretary and john brennan cia. i have a problem and a lot of people do when, for example, chuck hagel couldn't identify hamas and hezbollah as terrorist organizations. he was reluctant to do that, or even the iranian revolutionary guard or his comments about israel which i found quite disturbing. when he goes on to say that the jewish lobby intimidates a lot of people and in the case of brennan, he's got issues involving the holyland case where one of these hamas guys actually got into our national security center. when you read those things, nothing your background and knowing our enemy, what do you think? >> well, i think that, first, i don't judge the president's cabinet selections in quite the same way some people do by policy. i really think the most important thing, does the president trust them. 's got to form a team. the president's ultimately going to be responsible for the direction in which the administration goes. the cabinet has got to be a cohesive team that
nebraska republican senator chuck hagel to be the next secretary of defense. now, to pick his, a lot of criticism because of hagel's controversial comments about israel and iran in the past. and one of the people speaking out against the nomination is former new york city mayor ed koch he said this and i quote, frankly i thought there was a time he would renege, speaking of the president, on support of israel and comes a little earlier than i thought it would. it's very disappointing, i believe he will ultimately regret it koch said and undoubtedly reduce support for him in the jewish community i don't think that he, the president, worries about na now that the election is over. well, thank you, mayor, for your candor. the mayor's a democrat. but we should be concerned about this appointment because of chuck hagel's soft attitude toward iran, believing that we shouldn't apply sanctions, that we should have unconditional conversations these terrorists and somehow, maybe if we just make nice with them, they won't build a bomb and point it at everybody, but themselves. at the same time
of chuck hagel for secretary of defense. >> krauthammer says he thinks it give as preview of the second term and vision for the defense department. >>> i think what is happening in the second term obama is going to show who he really is. remember when he said to the soviet president after the election i will be more flexible which means he can be more of who he wants to be. number one item is cut down defense, the defense department. leon panetta said the cuts were supposed to go into effect on january the 1st and have now been delayed for a month. if they went into effect he gave i wanted indications he might resign on principal because he cannot carry it out. when hagel was asked he said the defense department is bloated and needs to be paired down. he is prepared to do the dismantling obama wanted to do never admitted he wanted to do but would be carried out in a second term. >> when discussing iran he said describing hagel as being soft is an under statement. what's going on with us today? >> still looking at more heavy rain associated with the storm system across texas and louisian
that the nomination like chuck hagel, which is fairly controversial, nonetheless is sure to be a winner for him because he's got the power of the presidency at a moment when he feels, you know, it is never going to be more powerful for him and in the rest of the second term. jon: i made that observation the other day because chuck hagel is not popular among some, even in the republican party. so the president gets to look bipartisan by nominating a republican, but it's a republican who doesn't enjoy widespread support or at least unanimous support from members of his own party. >> well, you know, you touched on something among the political pros in washington is much, a point of much conversation. you know he had challenged mitch mcconnell for leadership post while he was in the senate. so mcconnell doesn't have a whole lot of love for him. don't forget, he endorsed john kerry in that nebraska senate race that recently went to a republican. so people don't, of course he was opposed to the war. he opposed the surge in iraq. so the bush administration folks, again they don't have a whole lot of l
